The Gödöllő Palace is the biggest Baroque style palace complex of Hungary, well-known for its rich historical background and trend-setting architectural features, making it unparalleled all over the country.
Count Antal Grassalkovich I., one of the grandest aristocrats of the 17th century, and also a confidante of the Empress Maria Theresia , commissioned the building of the palace. It served as the centre of his Gödöllő estates and its white and gold ceremonial hall, its rooms with frescoed walls, marble covered bath and orangerie, its spacious riding hall, Baroque theatre hall, surrounded by a vast park duly represented the aristocratic life-style of the age. The building was a favourite holiday resort of Franz Joseph I and Queen Elizabeth between 1867 and 1916 then from1920 to 1944 served as the summer residence of Governor Miklós Horthy. After WW2, the years of decay followed, for half a century. Reconstruction gained pace after 1989, and it finally opened the gates of its central building to visitors in 1996, to welcome them with its old grandeur.
On the ground floor of the palace there is a nice café, gift shop, photo studio and event rooms suitable for exclusive receptions, gala dinners and conferences. In the Ceremonial Hall and Ceremonial Court there are concerts and festivals in the summer. In the only restored Baroque stone theatre of Hungary there are opera and classical music performances to entertain the audience.
