Madách Theatre

In 1999 Madách Theatre was fully renewed. Thanks to the reconstruction the theatre has now three performance areas: The Great Theatre with the audience capacity of 804. It features modern technical equipment suitable for any needs, including air-conditioning, making it a perfect venue for a summer event. Its social spaces, decorated with motives from the Carpathian Basin, Dalmatia and Northern Italy have a slightly Mediterranean atmosphere, they are spacious and comfortable.

Madách Studio can serve 180 guests. It has its own lighting and audio system and the audience area can be varied from performance to performance.

Tolnay Salon is directly adjacent to the social spaces of the Great Theatre, comprising of two rooms opening into each other. It was named after the great actress, Klári Tolnay who passed away in 1998. In the smaller room there is a Tolnay memorial site and regular fine art exhibitions. It can accommodate up to 100 guests .

Ars poetica of Madách Theatre is the musicals, to play music theatre.

Each season focuses on the performance of a major, world famous musical. These performances are characterised by independent artistic interpretation, in accordance with permissions of the authors, therefore they are non-replica performances.

Some of their most popular shows include musicals from Andrew Lloyd Webber such as The Phantom of the Opera, Cats (that has been ferociously successful for thirty years), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar. Of course they also play one of the classics of English humour:  Monthy Python’s Spamalot, and their latest premiere: Disney, Cameron Mackintosh and P. L. Travers’s world famous musical: Mary Poppins.

Apart from musicals, they also cultivate traditional theatre. In their repertoire, currently there are plays from authors such as Anthony Shaffer, Neil Simon, Ray Cooney or Frederick Stroppel. Madách Theatre is an internationally acclaimed company.
